With the 4th of July holiday fast approaching, the Long Beach Fire and Police Departments would like to remind residents, visitors, and staff that all fireworks, including those marked “Safe and Sane,” are ILLEGAL in the City of Long Beach.

The Fire and Police Departments will be out in force the days leading up to and on July 4th to ensure compliance of the Long Beach City Ordinance that bans fireworks. Although both Departments seek voluntary compliance to ensure public safety, this duty often requires strict enforcement of all laws through arrests and citations. Anyone cited or arrested for fireworks violations may be faced with a $1,000 fine, sentenced to jail for six months, or both. The fines and penalties may increase depending on the fireworks’ classification.

Fireworks may be voluntarily disposed at collection bins located at:

  • All fire stations
  • Lifeguard Headquarters 2100 E. Ocean Boulevard, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Any police station

For more information, alerts, advisories, and emergency news please visit www.longbeach.gov/fire, "Like" us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and Instagram, or contact LBFD Community Services at (562) 570-2525.

If you See Something, Say Something! Call Long Beach Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711 or 9-1-1 if you observe dangerous or illegal activities.

Hello, Colin Powell Academy students and families.

A few days ago, our school district notified you of potential student protests and or walkouts at some schools nationwide in response to the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  There may be at least three major student-led efforts underway nationally, including on Wednesday, March 14; Saturday, March 24; and Friday, April 20.

This is a reminder that our top priority is to support the needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all. Free political expression and activity is one of the great privileges that we enjoy in this country. It is a privilege that should be taken seriously and used in a responsible way. Teachers and administrators here are always glad to see students become interested in important issues facing our country, and are glad to encourage political participation by students, as long as it is done in a responsible way. We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school.

Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and

responsible way to work for change. We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Students attempting to leave campus will not be held at school. But it is important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable, and our usual expectations will remain in effect.

The most responsible way for students to pursue political change is to stay in school during school hours and pursue their political objectives here on campus in an acceptable forum, or wait until after-school hours to participate in political activities off campus. Opportunities for on-campus expression are being planned at all middle and high school campuses. In addition, Long Beach will be among the cities holding demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, March 24.  The Long Beach event is planned for 10 o’clock a.m. at Bixby Park, located at one thirty Cherry Avenue in Long Beach.

At Powell Academy, our staff and students are planning ways to demonstrate kindness, inclusion, and empathy toward others to make sure that every student feels safe at school.  Our Kindergarten through fifth grade students will make hearts with positive messages or a kindness paperchain to hold during a Kindness Walk around the Powell campus quad.  The middle school students will be participating in lessons about how to make a positive difference when advocating for a cause.  They will be the audience holding signs with messages as our elementary students participate in their Kindness Walk. The Kindness Walk will take place on Wednesday, March 14 at 10 o’clock a.m. and will end at 10 17 a.m.

Thank you for helping us to keep our focus on teaching and learning in a safe and respectful environment.  And for helping our students learn the power of kindness, inclusion, and empathy for others since all students have the right to feel safe at school, every day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hola, estudiantes y familias de Powell Academy.
Hace algunos días, nuestro distrito escolar le avisó a los padres de familia y estudiantes de posibles protestas estudiantiles y/o paros en algunas escuelas a nivel nacional en respuesta a la  reciente tragedia en Parkland, Florida.
Parece ser que por lo menos tres esfuerzos dirigidos por estudiantes están en curso, incluyendo el miércoles 14 de marzo; sábado 24 de marzo y viernes 20 de abril.  Este es un recordatorio de que nuestra prioridad principal es apoyar las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes mientras mantenemos un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y ordenado para todos. En este país uno de los privilegios principales de los que gozamos es la expresión política y actividad libre. Es un privilegio que debe tomarse seriamente y usarse de una forma responsable. Aquí los maestros y administradores siempre están contentos de ver a los estudiantes interesarse en temas importantes que nuestra nación enfrenta y se complacen en fomentar la participación política de los estudiantes, mientras se lleve a cabo de una manera responsable. Respetamos y apoyamos el derecho de nuestros estudiantes de abogar por causas que son importantes para ellos y apreciamos la oportunidad de trabajar con todo estudiante o grupo de estudiantes para abordar las formas apropiadas y creativas de hacerlo mientras están en la escuela.
El salir del plantel durante horas escolares para participar en actividad política no es una forma segura y responsable de trabajar para el cambio. Los animamos a que platique con sus hijos de cómo se sienten sobre este tema y de la importancia de expresarse en formas apropiadas dentro de la escuela. A los estudiantes que intenten salir del plantel no se les detendrá en la escuela. Pero es importante saber que la conducta desordenada que interrumpa las operaciones escolares no es aceptable y estarán en efecto nuestras expectativas habituales. La manera más responsable de que los estudiantes busquen un cambio político es permaneciendo en la escuela durante las horas escolares y buscando sus objetivos políticos aquí en el plantel a través de un foro aceptable, o esperando hasta después de las horas
escolares para participar en actividades políticas fuera del plantel. Se están planeando oportunidades para expresarse dentro del plantel para todas las escuelas intermedias y preparatorias. Además de esto, Long Beach es una de las ciudades que llevará a cabo demostraciones a nivel nacional el sábado 24 de marzo. El evento en Long Beach está programado para las 10:00 a.m. en el Bixby Park, ubicado en el 130 Cherry Ave. en Long Beach.
En la Academia Powell, nuestro personal y estudiantes están planeando maneras de demostrar amabilidad, inclusión y empatía hacia los demás para asegurarse de que cada estudiante se sienta seguro en la escuela. Nuestros estudiantes de kindergarten a quinto grado harán corazones con mensajes positivos o una amabilidad Paperchain a mantener durante un paseo de Amabilidad alrededor del Quad del campus de Powell. Los estudiantes de la escuela intermedia estarán participando en lecciones sobre cómo hacer una diferencia positiva al abogar por una causa. Ellos serán el público que tiene letreros con mensajes mientras nuestros estudiantes de primaria participan en su caminata por la amabilidad. El paseo de Amabilidad se llevará a cabo el miércoles, 14 de marzo a las 10 am y terminará a las 10 17 am. Gracias por ayudarnos a mantener nuestro enfoque en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en un ambiente seguro y respetuoso. Y por ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a aprender el poder de la bondad, la inclusión y la empatía por los demás, ya que todos los estudiantes tienen el derecho de sentirse seguros en la escuela, todos los días.
Gracias por ayudarnos a mantener el enfoque en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje en un ambiente seguro y de respeto. Por un ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a aprender el poder de la bondad, la inclusión y la empatía por los demás, ya todos los estudiantes tienen el derecho de sentirse seguros en la escuela, todos los días
Threat Prevention
Hello, Students and Families.
As we’ve seen in recent weeks, our schools are not immune to the potential threats that so many other schools nationwide have been dealing with.  We appreciate your heightened awareness of this issue, and we continue to encourage everyone in our school communities to report any suspicious information or activity that could impact school safety.
Threats to our schools are not harmless, and they are not funny.  They take valuable resources and time from our school district and the law enforcement agencies who work with us each day to keep our schools safe.  Threats cause anxiety for parents, students and staff, and they can disrupt the important work of teaching and learning.  Students who make threats face consequences that linger long after the threat is made.  We reiterate the Long Beach Police Department’s recent statement about such threats:
“The Long Beach Police Department takes all potential threats of violence very seriously and thoroughly investigates all reported incidents,” Chief Robert Luna said. “Making any kind of threat whether in person or online, is illegal and has serious consequences.”
Those consequences, as we also have seen in recent weeks, can include suspension, expulsion, arrest and potential prosecution under the law.  Students who make threats, even as a “joke,” can quickly find themselves facing the entire range of these consequences.
We urge parents to discuss this matter with their children.  In light of the senseless loss of lives in recent school shootings nationally, it is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to make threats, even as a “joke.”
We have appreciated everyone’s support during this challenging time.  Again, we continue to encourage students, parents and staff to immediately report any information that could impact the safety of others.  With your help, we can continue to provide safe schools and the best possible education for our students.
Sincerely,
Chris
Christopher J. Steinhauser
Prevención de amenazas
Hola, estudiantes y familias.
Como hemos visto en las últimas semanas, nuestras escuelas no son inmunes a las posibles amenazas que otras escuelas a nivel nacional han estado enfrentando. Agradecemos su intensificada concienciación sobre este problema y seguimos animando a todos dentro de nuestras comunidades escolares a reportar toda información o actividad sospechosa que pudiera afectar la seguridad escolar.
Las amenazas a nuestras escuelas no son inocentes y no son graciosas.  Le quitan recursos valiosos y tiempo a nuestro distrito escolar y a las agencias del orden público quienes trabajan con nosotros cada día para mantener nuestras escuelas seguras.  Las amenazas les provocan ansiedad a los padres de familia, los estudiantes y al personal y pueden interrumpir la importante tarea de enseñar y aprender.  Los estudiantes que hacen estas amenazas enfrentan consecuencias que perduran por mucho tiempo después de haberlas hecho.  Reiteramos la reciente declaración del Departamento de Policía de Long Beach sobre estas amenazas:
El jefe de policía Robert Luna dijo, “el Departamento de Policía de Long Beach toma muy en serio todas las posibles amenazas de violencia e investiga completamente todos los incidentes reportados.”   “Hacer cualquier tipo de amenaza, ya sea en persona o por internet, es ilegal y tiene consecuencias graves.”
Tales consecuencias, como también hemos visto en las recientes semanas, pueden incluir suspensión, arresto y un posible procesamiento legal.  Los estudiantes que hacen amenazas, aún en forma de “broma,” pueden encontrarse rápidamente enfrentando la gama completa de estas consecuencias.
Instamos a los padres de familia a platicar con sus hijos de este asunto.  A consecuencia de la pérdida sin sentido de vidas en los recientes tiroteos escolares a nivel nacional, es completamente inapropiado e inaceptable hacer estas amenazas, ni siquiera en forma de “broma.”
Agradecemos el apoyo de todos durante este tiempo difícil.  Seguimos animando a los estudiantes, los padres de familia y al personal a que reporten inmediatamente cualquier información que pudiera tener un impacto en la seguridad de otras personas.  Con su ayuda, podemos seguir proporcionando escuelas seguras y la mejor educación posible para nuestros estudiantes.
Sinceramente,
Chris
National Walkouts and Demonstrations
Hello, students and families.  The Long Beach Unified School District is aware of rumors of planned student protests and/or walkouts at some schools in response to the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  It appears that at least three major student-led efforts are underway nationally, including on Wednesday, March 14; Saturday, March 24; and Friday, April 20.
Our top priority is to support the needs of our students while maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment for all. Free political expression and activity is one of the great privileges that we enjoy in this country.  It is a privilege that should be taken seriously and used in a responsible way.  Teachers and administrators here are always glad to see students become interested in any important issues facing our country, and are glad to encourage political participation by students, as long as it is done in a responsible way.
We respect and support the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them and welcome the opportunity to work with any student or student group to discuss appropriate and creative ways to do so while at school.
Leaving campus during school hours to participate in political activity is not a safe and responsible way to work for change.  We encourage you to talk to your children about how they may be feeling about this topic, and the importance of expressing themselves in appropriate ways at school. Students attempting to leave campus will not be held at school.  But it’s important to know that disorderly conduct that disrupts school operations is not acceptable, and our usual expectations will remain in effect.
The most responsible way for students to pursue political change is to stay in school during school hours and pursue their political objectives here on campus in an acceptable forum, or wait until after-school hours to participate in political activities off campus.  Opportunities for on-campus expression are being planned at all middle and high school campuses.  In addition, Long Beach will be among the cities holding demonstrations nationwide on Saturday, March 24.  The Long Beach event is planned for 10 a.m. at Bixby Park, located at 130 Cherry Ave. in Long Beach.
Thank you for your continued support.
Christopher J. Steinhauser
Huelgas y Manifestaciones Nacionales
Hola, estudiantes y familias.  El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Long Beach está al tanto de los rumores de planes de protestas y/o huelgas estudiantiles en algunas escuelas en respuesta a la tragedia en Parkland, Florida.  Parece ser que por lo menos tres esfuerzos dirigidos por estudiantes están en curso a nivel nacional, incluyendo el miércoles, 14 de marzo; sábado, 24 de marzo; y viernes, 20 de abril.
Nuestra prioridad principal es apoyar las necesidades de nuestros estudiantes mientras mantenemos un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y ordenado para todos.  En este país uno de los privilegios principales de los que gozamos es la expresión política y actividad libre.  Es un privilegio que debería tomarse seriamente y utilizarse de una manera responsable.  Aquí los maestros y administradores siempre están contentos de ver a los estudiantes interesarse en temas importantes que nuestra nación enfrenta, y se complacen en fomentar la participación política de los estudiantes, mientras se lleve a cabo de una manera responsable.  Respetamos y apoyamos el derecho de nuestros estudiantes de abogar por causas que son importantes para ellos y apreciamos la oportunidad de trabajar con todo estudiante o grupo de estudiantes para tratar las formas apropiadas y creativas de hacerlo mientras están en la escuela.
El salir del plantel durante horas escolares para participar en actividad política no es una forma segura y responsable de trabajar para el cambio.  Los animamos a que platiquen con sus hijos de cómo se sienten sobre este tema y de la importancia de expresarse en formas apropiadas dentro de la escuela.  A los estudiantes que intenten salir del plantel no se les detendrá en la escuela.  Pero es importante saber que la conducta desordenada que interrumpa las operaciones escolares no es aceptable y estarán en efecto nuestras expectativas habituales.
La manera más responsable de que los estudiantes busquen un cambio político es permaneciendo en la escuela durante las horas escolares y buscando sus objetivos políticos aquí en el plantel a través de un foro aceptable, o esperando hasta después de las horas escolares para participar en actividades políticas fuera del plantel.  Se están planeando oportunidades para expresarse dentro del plantel para todas las escuelas intermedias y preparatorias.  Además de esto, Long Beach es una de las ciudades que llevará a cabo demostraciones a nivel nacional el sábado 24 de marzo.  El evento en Long Beach está programado para las 10:00 a.m. en el Bixby Park, ubicado en el 130 Cherry Ave. en Long Beach.
Gracias por su apoyo continuo.
Dear Powell Academy Middle School Parents,
Unfortunately, several of our middle school students became victims of a form of cyberbullying this past week.  Through the use of Snap Chat, a social media platform, students were encouraged to participate in an event called Fight Week.  Students received Snap Chat messages encouraging them to start a fight or capture a fight on video, making them members of a Fight Club.
Please carefully monitor your child’s social media platforms.  Snap Chat is especially dangerous because postings are erased in 24 hours.  Please discuss the impact that being manipulated in this way can have on their future.  The Long Beach Unified School District has a firm policy that no fighting is allowed on campus, or coming to or from school.  All students have been informed at grade level assemblies that fighting receives a consequence of suspension.
Our School Site Council has scheduled a special parent workshop on Cyberbullying & Social Media Platforms Impacting our Students on Thursday, March twenty second at two thirty pm in our school library.  Please save this date!
Please help us keep our students safe from this type of cyberbullying and manipulation.  With parents and teachers working together, we can teach our children to be more savvy about social media postings, to be kind to one another, and to be focused on learning to achieve at the highest level.  Thank you for your support in this important matter.
State law requires all public schools to create a School Accountability Report Card (SARC). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about your child's school, which includes:
  • School Description and Mission
  • School Programs and Instructional Materials
  • Opportunities for Parent Involvement
  • Test Results
  • Safety Plan
  • Facilities
We invite you to view the School Accountability Report Card (SARC) for your child's school.  You can find your school's SARC here.
Results of the 2017-2018 School of Choice Process for current eighth grade students will be sent home via US Mail this week. Results will also be visible in ParentVue beginning Friday, February 16, at 5:00pm.
Please remember, enrollment is not complete until you intend to a pathway that you have been accepted to. Failure to intend (via ParentVue) and certify by the deadline of 11:59pm Friday, February 23, 2018, can result in the loss of that acceptance.
After viewing your results, if you wish to file an appeal, a link to the form, as well as a paper copy will be available on our website. These forms can also be obtained from your Middle School or K8 Office.
We strongly recommend intending to a pathway while the appeals are being reviewed, as there is no guarantee of an appeal being granted.
For this year, the deadline to file an appeal is the close of business on March 16, 2018. Following that, the next opportunity to apply for a transfer will be April 1, 2019, through the High School Office.
If you have any questions, please call the High School Choice Helpline at (562) 997-8306.
The MS/K-8 Choice Office is aware that there is an error in the program that is locking some students out of selecting electives for each of their choices, and that this is preventing them from completing the application.
Our programming team is working on the issue and we will let you know when it is repaired.
The School of Choice application for sixth grade is not decided on a first come, first served basis. Every family that certifies and completes the application by the deadline will be considered on-time.
Thank you for your patience,
Team MS/K-8 Choice
For those students that orders several items, we ask that a parent come out to pick up the items as it may be too difficult for students to carry home on their own.  Thank you in advance for participating & supporting our school and your child.
